Five LPGA Championship Winners Join Field
As the LPGA Tour kicks off its second major of the season this week, the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G announced that it has received playing commitments from five winners of the tour’s second-longest running event, the Wegmans LPGA Championship. Laura Davies of England joins the field of LPGA notables in Arkansas including Cristie Kerr, Anna Nordqvist, Suzann Pettersen and Yani Tseng who are headed to Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, June 25- July 1.
“Anytime you can have major winners commit to your field it’s a great compliment to the event,” said Tournament Director David Shoemaker. “It speaks to the level of how much the players and the LPGA Tour enjoy the Northwest Arkansas community and how well-received they are by the fans.”
Davies and Tseng return to Arkansas as the only two-time winners of the LPGA Championship. Davies captured wins in both 1994 and 1996 at the Dupont Country Club in Delaware while Tseng won her first major as a rookie in 2008 at the Bulle Rocke Golf Course in Maryland. With the win, Tseng became the youngest winner in the event’s history. Tseng will look to defend her LPGA Championship title and claim her fourth win on Tour this year.
The Scandinavian contingent of LPGA Championship winners includes Suzann Pettersen of Norway and Anna Nordqvist of Sweden, each of whom earned their only LPGA major win at the LPGA Championship in 2007 and 2009, respectively.
Kerr is the lone American headed to Rogers with an LPGA Championship to her credit having won in Pittsford, NY in 2010, but that could change Sunday with Tour favorites Stacy Lewis, Brittany Lincicome and Paula Creamer all in the hunt for the second major victory of their careers.
“The field for the Northwest Arkansas Championship is shaping up to be one of the best yet,” said Shoemaker. “Fans should look to get their tickets now to enjoy the best players in the world when play in Rogers.”
